A bill was adopted on Tuesday to amend the rules of procedure at the Chamber to modernise the management of petitions with the overall aim of “making the process more transparent, clearer and smoother”, as stated on the Chamber’s website.
In future, in order to trigger a public debate in the Chamber, a petition will now have to collect 5,500 signatures in six weeks – instead of the current 4,500. Once the new threshold has been passed, petitioners will have a guarantee that a debate on their petition will be organised in fewer than four months.
New regulations also include electronic authentication via Luxtrust, or eIDAS, for both the submission of petitions and electronic signatures. The aim of this measure is to protect users from identity theft.
