As things stand, one needs to acquire A2-level speaking and B1-level listening comprehension in Luxembourgish to pass the “sproochentest,” or language test, as part of the normal application for Luxembourgish nationality.
The petition argues that Luxembourg “has three official langauages: Luxembourgish, French, and German,” and that requiring specifically one of these languages for nationality is a form of discrimination against speakers of the other two languages. “People who live and work in Luxembourg who speak French and German are also part of the country, and they should be considered for Luxembourgish nationality,” reads the petition.
The petition will be discussed in parliament should it reach the required threshold of 4,500 signatures. However, it is unlikely to lead to substantive change given the government’s focus on promoting the Luxembourgish language.
