The tragic collision took place at around 9pm on Avenue des Alliés, where the pedestrian was struck by an oncoming vehicle as he crossed the road.
The severely-injured 71-year-old was rushed to hospital, but succumbed to his injuries overnight, according to reports.
The public prosecutor’s office has ordered an autopsy and engaged forensics and measuring teams to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the incident. The vehicle which struck the man has been seized by authorities.
Police say the driver delivered negative results for both drugs and alcohol tests. Investigations are ongoing and will be overseen by Diekirch magistrates.
