UPGRADED CHARGE – The funeral of 33-year-old Antonio Perrotta took place on yesterday at 6pm in Fuscaldo, Calabria. The young man died after being attacked outside a nightclub in Sangineto, in the province of Cosenza, by two brothers based in Luxembourg, a week ago. The older brother has been released but remains under investigation, while the younger brother is still in pretrial detention and now faces an upgraded charge of premeditated murder.

VOLUNTEERS HELP EMERGENCY EFFORT – Luxembourg volunteers set off from Echternach with tractors, trucks, and water tanks yesterday to assist local teams fighting severe forest fires in Belgium. Organised by Martin Heynen via social media, the self-sufficient team took food, tents, and equipment, planning to spend three nights aiding the cross-border emergency relief effort.

BERTRANGE FIRE – Emergency services were called out shortly before 1am on Tuesday to a fire in a flat on Rue de Luxembourg in Bertrange. According to the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS), no one was injured in the incident. Firefighters from Luxembourg City, Bertrange, Mamer, Dippach, and Hesperange, as well as the Luxembourg City SAMU medical team, attended the scene.

MCGILL UNIVERISTY – Luxembourg, a leading European hub for investment funds, is aiming to secure its position in the international financial sector by investing in future talent, as McGill University launches a new master's programme in finance in the Grand Duchy. The centre’s mission extends far beyond the new master’s programme. In addition to training finance professionals, it serves as a platform for research, exchange, and innovation, allowing new ideas and insights to flow directly into financial sector practice.

World

ZAMBIAN PRESIDENT RE-ELECTED – Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema secured a second term with 60% of the vote. Main challenger, Brian Mundubile, followed with 38%. While Hichilema touted economic gains, critics have alleged voter intimidation, irregularities, and questions on a six-hour counting freeze that observers warned harmed the process's integrity.

INDONESIA CLOUD SEEDING – Indonesia is ramping up cloud seeding operations to combat worsening wildfires in Borneo fueled by El Niño. Deforestation monitors report over 285,000 hectares burned throughout July. While officials claim chemical spraying optimizes rainfall, experts, however, question its effectiveness during dry seasons when cloud cover is minimal.

TRUMP BORDER PAUSED – Donald Trump's administration said yesterday it had paused construction on a $1.7 billion border project at Big Bend National Park in Texas that has faced fierce local opposition across party lines. The plans were to build vehicle barriers, patrol roads, lighting, and detection technology across the park, known for its spectacular views and rich biodiversity, including hundreds of bird species, bobcats and black bears.

ASIAN GAMES – Preparations are in full swing for the Asian Games which begin in Japan in a month's time featuring teenage prodigies, more athletes than the Olympics and a cruise ship that will house competitors in the middle of typhoon season. About 15,000 competitors and officials are expected at the event, which takes place in Nagoya and the wider Aichi area from 19 September to 4 October.

FOOTBALL – Spain's World Cup-winning captain Rodri arrived in Barcelona yesterday to sign a contract with the La Liga champions as one of the transfer sagas of the summer draws to its conclusion. He said his aims with Barcelona would be "the Champions League and whatever else comes our way".

GOLF LIV Golf's scheduled team championship in Michigan next week has been canceled, the series announced on Monday, meaning this week's Indianapolis event will conclude the 2026 campaign. Spain's Jon Rahm has already clinched his third consecutive season points title but the series will also crown its team champion from Thursday through Sunday at The Club at Chatham Hills.

Cloudy conditions to start the day, although this should clear somewhat during the morning and we will have a mixture of sunshine and gray skies throughout. Visibility may still be affected by smoke in the atmosphere and there is a slight chance of showers during the afternoon. Temperature wise we are currently around 17 degrees and this will rise to a high of about 23 during the afternoon.
