CID Women and GenderParties still have room for improvement in terms of equality

Ahead of the legislative elections, the Centre for Information and Documentation (CID) Women and Gender has presented various policy proposals in the fight against racism and sexism.

The demands are based on a questionnaire distributed by the CID to Luxembourg’s political parties and revolve around the areas of education, labour, culture, politics, and society. The questionnaire found that many parties are already debating these issues, although the CID notes that there is still room for improvement in some areas. Parties sometimes “lack concrete ideas” or are “unaware of certain forms of discrimination.”

The parties largely agree that violence prevention should be included in police, judiciary, and healthcare training.

Isabelle Schmoetten from the CID Women and Gender explains that while Luxembourg has made significant efforts to fight gender-based violence, “it’s simply not enough.” She points to the recent string of femicides, “which are still not being referred to as such in Luxembourg,” as an example of inaction. Present efforts are overly reactive, and the CID believes that there should be a larger emphasis on prevention.

Parties have proposed measures to combat sexual harassment in public, but it is unclear how they would be implemented. The CID Women and Gender calls for better lighting of public areas and additional employees on public transportation.

CID member Claire Schadeck observes that one unintended consequence of free public transport is a reduction in staff presence. As a result, reporting sexual harassment and seeking assistance has become more difficult.

In addition, the CID calls for the development of an intersectional equality policy, noting that political decisions must take into account those who face different kinds of discrimination.

The CID has shared its demands with the various political parties.
