Luxembourg has a population of around 660,000 residents. Of these, only 286,739 individuals were eligible to vote on Sunday or had voluntarily registered to vote, if not legally obligated to do so. In the end, only 249,968 ballots were deposited into the ballot boxes, revealing that more than 36,000 citizens abstained from voting, despite the fact that it is mandated by law.
In addition, a significant number of ballots were void, with 7,889 left blank and over 10,000 deemed invalid, either because too many votes had been cast, or because of drawings or annotations on the ballot paper, or because something other than the ballot paper had been added to the envelope.
As such, it can be deduced that out of the 286,739 registered voters, only 231,344 exercised their right to vote. Ultimately, of the slightly more than 4 million votes available, only 3,763,680 were cast, resulting in the loss of over 277,600 potential votes.
