Orthodox Ukrainians here in Luxembourg searched for a place of worship for almost a year. In the end, the municipality of Luxembourg City and the diocese selected the Saint Hubert church in Dommeldange as a suitable location.
The first mass was held one week ago and on Saturday, the community of orthodox Ukrainians gathered in the church again to celebrate the baptism of Jesus Christ, a ceremony led by father Illarion.
Mykola Novikov, consul for Luxembourg in Kyiv, was present at the ceremony and explained the importance of the gathering: “It is our faith. We believe in god, in our country, and now also in our victory. We know why we are fighting and for what we are waiting. The church helps and supports us, helps us go on ... and win.”
During the search for a suitable location of worship, orthodox Ukrainians found a temporary solution at the Greek-orthodox church in Weiler-la-Tour.
Serki Sviatko elaborated: “We brought a number of religious objects from Kyiv, including candles, icons, and much more. Our goal is to convene here every week, but unfortunately, father Illarion can only come her twice a month as he lives in Brussels.”
While a regular pastor is still missing, the orthodox community is not short of volunteers helping out in their new church.
