Luxembourg weather warningOrange alert for floods extended until Sunday

RTL Today
Meteolux has extended the current orange alert until Sunday, after a week of heavy rain and flooding across Luxembourg.

Earlier this week, southern Luxembourg was placed on red alert as heavy rainfall caused the country’s waterways to swell beyond their banks. On Thursday, the authorities reduced the alert to orange level, as water levels began to recede, but on Friday morning, Meteolux announced the orange alert was to be extended by two days, until Sunday evening.

Friday began under overcast skies, with isolated rain showers expected throughout the day. Light drizzle is forecast for Saturday, giving way to light snowfall on Sunday as temperatures are set to plummet as low as -7°C.

Flood update

According to the latest reports, water levels are continuing to fall at measuring stations along the Alzette river and its tributaries, with most already below the pre-alert level.

The Moselle River’s water levels have remained stable at the Stadtbredimus scale and are expected to reduce throughout the day on Friday.

Authorities described the January flooding as a ‘decennial’ event - meaning likely to happen once every ten years - but Jean-Paul Lickes, director of Luxembourg’s Water Management Agency, underlined that it is not expected to reach the catastrophic levels of summer 2021.
