Outside Chamber of DeputiesOGBL union protests in support of Caritas workers

RTL Today
Around 150 people gathered outside the Chamber of Deputies on Friday afternoon to protest in support of Caritas staff in the wake of the embezzlement scandal.

Alongside the Independent Luxembourg Trade Union Confederation (OGBL), other organisations such as Amnesty joined the protest, as well as a number of MPs from the opposition. CSV MP Marc Spautz also attended the demonstration.

The OGBL has demanded clarity on the future of Caritas employees, criticising the lack of communication from those in charge at the charity and on the crisis committee, which was implemented after news of the embezzlement broke earlier this year.

From 1 October, Caritas’ national activities will henceforth be conducted by the new entity “Hut - Hellef um Terrain”. The government is said to have lost trust in the charity following the announcement that 61 million euros in funds were embezzled through foreign banks.
