According to the latest report of the natur&emwelt organisation, the northern wheatear has disappeared from Luxembourg. Biologists and animal protectionists also expressed concerns about the populations of barn owls, Eurasian skylarks, sparrows, and peewits.

The organisation had more positive news regarding Luxembourg's animal care stations. 2019 came as a record year: the sanctuaries fostered around 3,500 animals belonging to 150 different species.

May, June, and July had been particularly busy months for the sanctuaries due to the exceptionally warm weather. 1,600 animals were taken to wild animal drop-off points during this period.

Natur&ëmwelt remains an active player when it comes to preserving Luxembourg's biodiversity and bringing to life new biotopes. The organisation has created no less than 1,500 hectares of protected areas over the last 40 years.

Around 74 hectares of the protected lands were bought last year, including a parcel of land in Kiischpelt and meadows in Machtum, Elvange, and the Moselle region.
