The Chamber of Deputies has declined to establish a parliamentary inquiry committee to review the country’s Covid-19 pandemic response, following a debate on Wednesday sparked by Public Petition 2489.
The petition, which garnered nearly 5,000 signatures, had called for a comprehensive evaluation of anti-pandemic measures and vaccine data.
Submitted two years ago under the previous 4,500-signature requirement, the petition sought an “independent multidisciplinary committee” to examine the health, statistical, scientific, and political dimensions of Luxembourg’s pandemic management. Debate on the matter had been repeatedly postponed until Wednesday’s session, which was followed live by our colleagues from RTL Radio.
Petitioner Amar Goudjil used the platform to voice controversial claims about Covid-19 vaccines, stating they “are not tools designed to save lives, but a means of breaking down and damaging the immune system in children” and serve to create “future customers for the pharmaceutical industry.” He dismissed assertions of vaccine efficacy as “a deception that should be systematically condemned.”
MPs rejected the petitioner’s allegations, maintaining that Luxembourg’s pandemic measures were implemented transparently. Minister of Health Martine Deprez offered a robust defence of the nation’s healthcare workers:
“Our staff aren’t just good – they have been excellent, especially […] throughout the three years of Covid-19,” Deprez stated. “If there’s one lesson we should take from this crisis, it’s the vital importance of healthcare professionals,” she stressed, adding, “We must ensure they can continue working in safe environments, and vaccines remain part of that.”
Francine Closener, President of the Parliamentary Petitions Committee, acknowledged that there are still many lessons to be drawn from the pandemic, especially the more “controversial” decisions, but noted that the issue of vaccines falls beyond Luxembourg’s parliamentary purview.
The session concluded with confirmation that no formal investigation into pandemic measures would be established.
