Good news for the north of the country: the project to transform the former military estate in Diekirch is progressing. The National Society for Affordable Housing (SNHBM) is planning to replace it with a brand new residential area.
A total of 184 dwellings will be built by 2031, 124 of which will be ‘affordable.’ The other 60 will be allocated to the Luxembourgish army for “young career soldiers.” The building will also house commercial areas, administrative spaces, and a crèche. The flats will range in size from 67 to 75 m2.
The ministries of housing and defence have announced that 113 of the affordable homes will be for rent, while the remaining 11 will be for sale: “Eventually, the new neighbourhood will accommodate just over 420 residents.”

Following the example of the new districts planned for Kirchberg/Luxembourg City, this new complex has been designed as a “real meeting place.” The speed limit for motorised traffic on the surface will be 20 km/h and parking will be entirely underground: “This deliberately restrictive approach has been designed to limit car traffic and provide a safe pedestrian area that encourages exchanges between users.”
The district will also have a wide central promenade “punctuated by trees in alignment guiding users from the pedestrian street to the banks of the Sûre.”
“Although this is a rather complex project, we are delighted to be able to build new affordable housing in the centre of Diekirch,” said Guy Entringer, director of SNHBM.
The Government Council has passed the bill authorising the State to participate in the financing of the housing project, to the tune of €190.5 million.
The project will be carried out over the next eight years:
