Officially announced on Friday morning: Bertrange has a new mayor. Youri de Smet, a 31-year-old alderman from the Democratic Party (DP), will take over the role following the resignation of Monique Smit-Thijs, who steps down after three years at the helm. Although leaving the mayoral post, the liberal politician will continue to serve on the municipal council as a councillor.
This change also brings a reshuffle within the DP-led mayoral council. Marc Lang is set to join as the new alderman, alongside de Smet and former mayor Frank Colabianchi, who remains part of the council.
The appointments still require to be formally approved by the Minister of the Interior and the Grand Duke, after which the official inauguration ceremony can take place.
