SanemNew jail soon to be completed after five years of construction

RTL Today
The new jail in Sanem is expected to open in late 2022 or early 2023.

Sanem Prison will have the capacity to accommodate up to 400 inmates, who have not yet been sentenced by a court, on remand.

The prisoners will be looked after by 380 employees, most of whom are men, including 230-240 guards. The prison will also employ socio-educational personnel in the future. Some staff have been hired in preparation for the opening, while transfers to Sanem are also planned from Schrassig or Givenich.

Except for some single-person cells, the new jail is divided into cells for two people, with doors that will generally stay open. As it is a remand facility, prisoners are not expected to stay in Sanem for long periods of time and will either be transferred to Schrassig or released. Inmates will also be able to take classes.

Visits will be offered according to a pre-arranged schedule on certain days and at certain times in a large visiting room or in several visiting rooms, with or without separation.

The use of mobile phones is strictly forbidden in the whole of Sanem, a measure which also applies to visitors and prison staff.
