Only days after the Ministry greenlit the planned pedestrian and cycling bridge between Weimershof and Cents, a local interest group is reiterating its concerns over the construction project.

An initial budget of €24 million has been reserved for the bridge, which will be built above Neudorf, from which people will also have access to the structure. According to Luxembourg City Alderman Patrick Goldschmidt, construction work is expected to start in Autumn. Trees will have to be removed to make room for the pillars and a lift.

Danielle Castellaneta, vice president of the Neudorf interest group, has drawn attention to alternative solutions that would not harm nature or people for the sake of a “prestige project”.

Syndicate president Roger Braun has also expressed doubt over the Ministry’s decision to authorise the project: “The authorisation only takes into account the trees, bats, and redstarts. Eagle owls are only briefly mentioned although their breeding habitat is affected, peregrine falcons are not even mentioned. And, when we asked for an environmental impact study, the Ministry told us that this is only necessary for large-scale projects. But, when exactly is a project large-scale?”

The Ministry is expected to issue a reaction to these accusations at a later point on Thursday.
