Under the existing process, all applicants for Luxembourg citizenship must complete a language test in Luxembourgish. To pass, candidates must reach A2 level in speaking, as well as B1 in listening.

The petition was launched in July, but received only 3,734 signatures before Thursday's deadline, well under the 4,500 required for it to be discussed by Luxembourg's deputies.

The petition had argued that 'people who live and work in Luxembourg who speak French and German are also part of the country, and they should be considered for Luxembourgish nationality.'

RTL Today's Martin Jonsson outlined why he believed the existing requirements should be maintained in a piece you can read here.
