The situation is "concerning" and it is "unacceptable" that people no longer dare to walk through the capital's parks, according to local officials.

Mayor Lydie Polfer and Municipal Executive Board Member Serge Wilmes both expressed their concern during the City Breakfast press briefing on Wednesday morning. In light of the recent assault on the Kinnekswiss, Polfer stressed that Minister of Internal Security Henri Kox’s “negative attitude” towards security cameras is “inexplicable and unacceptable.”

The Mayor argued that the “almost daily” news stories about stabbings show that “this is not about people feeling insecure, it’s sadly a reality,” adding that “unfortunately, we are still waiting for measures that show that others are also taking this seriously.”

The municipal executive board (Schäfferot) of Luxembourg City will direct the private security personnel, who are already patrolling the capital’s parks, to start their rounds at 3pm instead of 5pm. Wilmes stressed that this is “certainly not the full solution” to the problem, which is why the municipal authorities will continue to demand an increased police presence.
