According to Syvicol president Emile Eicher, municipalities are more than willing to take in further refugees, but it is difficult to prepare given the limited information on how many people are expected to arrive.
Local officials are concerned about a lacking overview and noted that they cannot take concrete measures until they know more about the number of refugees.
Even though 4,000 Ukrainians have already arrived in the Grand Duchy according to government reports, many of the mayors present at the Syvicol meeting indicated that they have not yet received any official application.
They also underlined that they want to begin preparing infrastructure early on, which is in the best interest of the refugees. This includes both housing and child care.
The union thus proposes that the government call into action those individuals that already gained experience in crisis management during the pandemic. President Eicher believes that they dispose of the needed skills to handle such an enormous challenge.
The union president also issued an appeal to all Ukrainian refugees to file an official application for international protection, as this will guarantee insurance and allow their children to go to school here in Luxembourg.
