Taking up two parking spaces at once is already bad enough, but doing so on spaces reserved for people with disabilities, and apparently without the required parking permit, takes things to another level. The illegal parking seen in the picture above was observed on Thursday 5 February at around noon at Luxexpo The Box.

We contacted the Grand Ducal Police to find out what penalties apply in such a case.

The answer can be found in the Highway Code, page 343, Article 107.35, which provides for a fine of €145 for parking or stopping on a space reserved for vehicles used to transport people with disabilities, the police confirmed this week.

It is worth recalling that, to be allowed to park in such a space, a valid disabled parking permit must be clearly displayed on the vehicle’s windscreen. The permit is a light blue card featuring the wheelchair symbol.

No such permit was visible on the wrongly parked car at Luxexpo. The sticker visible on the left-hand side of the windscreen related only to the vehicle’s emissions category. In any case, occupying two parking spaces at the same time is strictly prohibited.

The police also point out that anyone witnessing illegal or obstructive parking can report it to the authorities. Vehicles parked on spaces reserved for people with disabilities, as well as other improperly parked cars, can be reported to the police.

Finally, it is important to remember that nearly 15% of people living in Luxembourg, or around 95,000 residents, report having a disability. Visual impairment, reduced mobility, and hearing impairment are among the most common forms of disability.
