Upon an enquiry by RTL, Minister of Labour Marc Spautz firmly rejected the Federation of Craftspeople’s proposal to abolish the qualified social minimum wage, emphasising that such a measure is not foreseen in the coalition agreement.
Concerning the federation’s wider strategy wish relating to the minimum wage – such as its adjustment and possible compensation measures for businesses – Spautz refrained from making any spontaneous remarks. He noted that while he had previously expressed a preference for using median income as the reference value for calculating the unqualified minimum wage, he wished to first address the matter within the Government Council.
When asked whether he would raise the issue during the council meeting this Friday, Spautz could not confirm, but assured that he would do so “soon”. He also drew attention to the upcoming AI roundtable discussion on Thursday, where the government is set to meet with social partners.
