Ministry of HealthMinister discusses alcohol awareness campaign

RTL Today
The abuse of alcohol is considered a national health issue. Minister of Health Paulette Lenert discussed new directives and a new awareness campaign with RTL.

Above all, the Ministry's plan of action is focused on awareness and prevention. The new campaign is primarily aimed at younger people.

Paulette Lenert said the government was working on age restrictions for the purchase of alcohol. At present, teenagers aged under 18 are not allowed to consume high-percentage alcohol. Further discussions are planned to consider the issue.

Lenert also explained that prevention strategies were needed on the ground, particularly at events in which alcohol is consumed to excess.

The Ministry has planned a presence at events in Diekirch, Echternach and Hesperange, with stands where the public can engage with the information available. T-shirts and alcohol tests will be distributed in an effort to persuade people to drink in safe circumstances.

Lenert said she hoped the prevention measures would encourage the public to take more care when consuming alcohol and to observe the limits. The plan has a budget of 1.8 million euros over five years.
