The choice of a pope from the US, a historic first, has drawn intrigue amid global political tensions – but Auxiliary Bishop Leo Wagener argues it's the pontiff's humility, not his nationality, that will shape his legacy.

In an interview with our colleagues from RTL Télé, Auxiliary Bishop Leo Wagener shared his thoughts on the election of Pope Leo XIV on Thursday evening in Vatican City.

Wagener admitted he had not expected the conclave to reach a decision so quickly but emphasised that the Church was “very relieved and happy” with the swift outcome. He noted that the speed of the decision sends “a good message,” suggesting the cardinals were able to find consensus relatively easily.

While Wagener acknowledged that the new pope’s US background is “interesting” – particularly in light of the Trump presidency – he stressed that personality matters more than nationality. Describing Robert Francis Prevost as a “discreet” figure who avoids the spotlight, Wagener remarked that Leo XIV is “a completely different person compared to Francis.” However, he believes this contrast could be beneficial, as it may prevent constant comparisons to his predecessor.

Wagener also highlighted the significance of the papal name, noting that Leo XIII was renowned for his advocacy for the working class and social issues.

Though Wagener does not know the new pope personally, he recalled meeting him during a visit to the catacombs of Brussels’ Heysel Stadium. Prevost, he said, was “so discreet that you barely noticed his presence,” characterising him as someone who “stands out by his simplicity and plainness.”

Before the conclave, Luxembourg’s Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich had pointed out that many cardinals were unfamiliar with one another. Despite Prevost only being named a cardinal in September 2023, Wagener described his rise as “inevitable,” noting his previous role in recommending bishop candidates - a position that had already earned him recognition within the Vatican.

Wagener emphasised that Luxembourg should not be disappointed by Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich’s failure to secure the papacy, noting that Hollerich himself had no expectations of being elected. “I am convinced our cardinal played a significant role in the conclave,” Wagener said.

The next major milestone will be the new pope’s enthronement. Wagener clarified that while Prevost officially became pope upon accepting his election, the celebratory mass serves as his public investiture before the global community.

For the Luxembourgish Church, the event carries particular significance: Cardinal Hollerich will need to attend the ceremony in Rome, potentially causing his absence during the Grand Duchy’s Octave celebrations.
