
In light of the current health crisis, the Ministry for Cooperation has given NGOs more budget flexibility to allow them to continue their humanitarian projects across the world. Representatives from six NGOs met with Prime Minister Xavier Bettel and the Minister for Cooperation, Franz Fayot, to discuss the situation and their work.

Travel bans to certain regions and quarantine measures further complicate their work. At the same time, donations towards international aid have dropped by 25% these past few months.
Furthermore, developing countries have become more dependent on international aid. The Covid crisis has hit their economies particularly hard, while the health impact on their populations adds further strife. NGOs are cautioning against a potential famine in Africa.
Development aid is and remains an important aspect of foreign policy for the Grand Duchy, which finances many projects around the world, notably in Burkina Faso, Laos and Nicaragua.
