Scam alertLuxembourg police warn of fake fine notices sent via email and text

RTL Today
Residents in Luxembourg are being targeted by a new wave of scams involving fake emails and text messages claiming unpaid fines, prompting a warning from the police.

In recent weeks, the Luxembourg police have reported a surge in complaints about fraudulent emails and text messages demanding payment for alleged unpaid fines. The messages typically warn recipients to pay immediately or face increased penalties.

The police have emphasised that state authorities, including the police and customs, never communicate fines or warnings via email or text message. Official notifications of fines are always sent by post.

To help the public avoid falling victim to such scams, the police have issued the following recommendations:

  • Do not succumb to pressure from threats of fines or increased penalties.
  • If you receive a suspicious message, verify its authenticity and consider sharing it with someone else for a second opinion.
  • Be cautious of messages containing spelling errors or unusual language, as these are often indicators of a scam.
  • If you are unsure about the origin of a message, contact the relevant organisation directly to confirm its legitimacy.
