German police launched a major operation in the town of Sankt Ingbert, Saarland, on Tuesday, after suspicions arose of unauthorised handling of radioactive minerals by a 24-year-old man. According to local media reports, authorities carried out extensive analyses at the suspect’s flat, located in a multi-family building, and detected elevated levels of radiation.
While officials have not yet disclosed the precise nature or quantity of the substances involved, they confirmed that the property is no longer deemed safe for habitation. Local authorities stated that there is no risk to the wider public at this time.
Initial investigations suggest the substances are naturally occurring minerals with inherent radioactivity. Experts warn that mechanical processing of such stones can release harmful radioactive particles, which pose a health risk if inhaled.
