On Thursday morning, the Ministry of Health announced that Luxembourg is “nearing the peak” of the current flu epidemic, based on the latest infection figures. While the number of people falling ill continued to rise last week, the increase was minimal.

In the week from 27 January to 2 February 2025, laboratories reported a slight uptick in flu cases, with the total rising from 2,448 to 2,509 – a 2% increase over the previous week. According to the Ministry of Health’s weekly review of respiratory diseases, infections remain particularly prevalent among children and adolescents.

“The number of cases appears to be stabilising, suggesting that the epidemic may be nearing its peak”, the ministry stated cautiously, noting that this trend will need to be confirmed in the following week.

Of the influenza cases typed during the reporting period, 56% were identified as influenza A and 44% as influenza B. Among the influenza A virus samples, subtypes A(H1)pdm9 accounted for 48.5%, while A(H3) made up 51.5%.

For the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), there was a slight decrease of 3% in confirmed cases last week, dropping from 258 to 249. Infections primarily affected the youngest and oldest age groups, including young children and individuals over 80.

Regarding Covid-19, the number of positive SARS-CoV-2 cases declined slightly, falling by 1% from 77 to 76 compared to the previous week.
