
Luxembourg is experiencing a significant flu outbreak among children, with hospitals reporting a surge in cases that Dr Isabelle de la Fuente from the Children’s Clinic describes as a “true epidemic”.
Speaking to our colleagues from RTL Radio, Dr de la Fuente noted that this year’s flu season is far more intense than in previous years, with twice as many children hospitalised compared to the same period last year. Young children, in particular, face a high risk of complications, with many patients at the Children’s Clinic suffering from breathing difficulties or pneumonia.
The clinic is nearing its capacity for both consultations and available beds, prompting Dr de la Fuente to emphasise the importance of preventive measures. In addition to wearing face masks, she strongly recommends getting the flu vaccine. However, she acknowledged that the virus mutates rapidly, meaning even vaccinated individuals may not be fully protected. The reasons behind this year’s widespread flu outbreak remain unclear.
Dr. Serge Allard, pediatrician and president of the Luxembourg Society of Paediatricians, confirmed that Luxembourg is currently experiencing the peak of flu season. He added that it is difficult to predict how long this peak will last. Common symptoms in children include headaches, high fever, and muscle aches, with flu infections typically lasting five to six days.
