A lorry loaded with construction materials and emergency supplies has departed Luxembourg for Portugal, aiming to assist victims of the severe weather that has struck the country in recent days.

The initiative is being led by the Luxembourg-based company Sopinor, which dispatched a vehicle carrying building materials, tools, and protective clothing for those assisting families affected by floods and extensive damage caused by the storms.

According to a report by Bom Dia, the lorry departed on Friday and is heading for the hardest-hit areas. The company, which employs numerous Portuguese workers, stated that it intends to respond to the emergency and support communities severely impacted by the weather.

The operation is part of a broader wave of solidarity from the Portuguese diaspora, which has mobilised extensively since the crisis began. The heavy rains have left many families homeless and caused significant damage to local infrastructure. Portuguese authorities are continuing to assess the scale of the needs, while private and community-led efforts are increasing to deliver aid on the ground.

Sopinor’s lorry is expected to arrive in Portugal within the coming hours, where the goods will be distributed in coordination with local organisations. The company has indicated that it will remain mobilised as long as the situation requires. A second delivery is already being prepared to address the extent of the needs, according to a statement posted on the company’s LinkedIn account.

How can you help?

The appeal, launched by the Portugal-Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCILL) and Sopinor, is primarily aimed at companies and entrepreneurs in the Grand Duchy, but is open to the wider community as well.

Those wishing to contribute to the relief effort are encouraged to notify the chamber of commerce by email at info@ccill.lu or to deliver material goods directly to the logistics centre set up at Sopinor’s Schifflange site (Sopinor, 70, Zone Industrielle um Monkeler, 4149 Schifflange).
