Top spot for a getaway?Luxembourg attracts increasing number of tourists

The 2023 tourist season put a clear end to any fears caused by the pandemic, with 3.4 million overnight stays recorded — ten per cent more than in 2019.

“We are particularly pleased that 60 per cent of the foreign visitors recorded in 2022 and 2023 had never been to Luxembourg before,” explained DP Minister for Tourism Eric Thill at the launch of the official 2024 campaign.

The tourists targeted by this campaign in recent years prefer an authentic offering, and more generally prioritise quality over mass tourism. More than 70 per cent of overnight stays were in hotels, with 40 per cent of them in Luxembourg City.

Building on the success of last year, this year’s campaign now focuses on cultural tourism, with a selection of events and tourist sites that highlight the culture of Luxembourg’s various regions:

“There are so many examples, such as Hiking Meets Local Food in Munshausen, the Koll-an-Aktioun festival at the historic site of the former quarries in Haut-Martelange, the comic strip festival in Contern and the Blues and Jazz Rallye in the capital”, the Minister enthusiastically announced.

The pandemic allowed residents to experience holidays here in Luxembourg, without necessitating too much travel. But do people still consider this a preferred mode of holiday making?

“It hasn’t completely disappeared, it has settled down to a more normal level, but the most important thing is that residents have realised that our country is full of beauty. You can spend a few days close to home and feel like you’re on holiday,” explains Sebastian Reddeker, head of Luxembourg for Tourism.

According to Reddeker, the pandemic has had a significantly positive effect on Luxembourg: its reputation as an outdoor destination has been highlighted and many people are coming with the specific aim of making the most of Luxembourg’s opportunities in nature.
