According to Luxair’s board of directors, the airline has purchased two new aircraft and will lease the same models until the purchase is complete in three years’ time.
The new Boeing 737-8 aircraft can complete distances of up to 5,700 kilometres, enabling longer flights than Luxair’s current fleet capacity. In addition, the new models emit around 20% less CO2.
Negotiations to buy an additional two planes are ongoing. The plans to purchase a total of four new models forms an essential part of investment in the airline’s future. Luxair CEO Gilles Feith explained that the choice to purchase Boeing planes over Airbus was made because the 737-8 currently has a much faster lead time, which meets Luxair’s requirements for their fleet. The Airbus 320 is also a good aircraft, he added, but there were no acceptable delivery options. In addition, it is easier to train pilots to fly the Boeing 737-8.
