They are to replace Martine Lamesch, a lawyer who resigned only three years after her appointment to the Council of State, and Charles Lampers, who was a member of the institution for 11 years.
A month ago, the Chamber of Deputies published a call for tenders for one of these positions - that of Charles Lampers. A lawyer specialised in municipal law or constitutional law was sought.

According to information obtained by our colleagues from RTL.lu, the current mayor of Bettembourg, Laurent Zeimet, appears to be the likely candidate to fill the position.

However, before this can happen, MPs still need to endorse the decision. The candidacies will be approved on Thursday morning during the Conference of Presidents and the date of the swearing-in in plenary session will be fixed.

According to our colleagues from RTL.lu, at least three other members of the CSV have applied for the vacant position on the Council of State, in addition to Laurent Zeimet. If they do not withdraw their candidacy, the vote could become interesting.

After speculations that Zeimet may return to the Chamber of Deputies to replace the former minister Jean-Marie Halsdorf, it seems that this is no longer on the CSV’s agenda and that the former MP is indeed in the running for the Council of State.

The former journalist for the newspaper ‘Luxemburger Wort’ has been mayor of Bettembourg for 11 years. During the last legislative elections, Laurent Zeimet came eighth on the CSV list in the south of the country and missed his return to the Chamber of Deputies by 173 votes.

He was also general secretary of the CSV for seven years and an MP for four years. It should be noted that in Luxembourg, a person can hold the office of both mayor and that of MP or member of the Council of State at the same time.

The other vacant position on the Council of State, that of Martine Lamesch, must also be filled by a candidate close to the CSV. In this case, this candidature must be approved by the government, which is in fact a pure formality.
