The LSAP’s Jean Asselborn, who has filled the role of Foreign Affairs Minister since 2004, was directly elected to the Chamber of Deputies for a ninth time on Sunday. With close to 33,400 votes, he recorded the best result in Luxembourg’s southern constituency.

Despite the resounding support, the 74-year-old now risks losing his mandate given that, according to his own assessment, everything currently points toward a coalition between CSV and DP.

In conversation with RTL, Asselborn said that he will continue to fulfil his duties for as long as the incumbent coalition remains in power. When asked whether he would sit on the Chamber’s opposition benches, the politician refrained from commenting.
