The number of positive tests increased by 1% over the course of last week. A total of 25,070 PCR tests were carried out, of which 2,688 came back positive.

The figures do not take account of infections since the 26 December. On Wednesday, Luxembourg recorded a record 1,053 cases from 4,496 tests.

The positivity rate among young people recorded the most significant increase. The incidence rate is now set at 423 cases per 100,000 residents. The rate for unvaccinated people is 623.89, the one for vaccinated 328.44.

Half of hospital patients are unvaccinated. 18 out of 47 in normal care are fully inoculated, while 13 out of 19 ICU patients are not vaccinated. The average age of hospitalised patients decreased from 64 to 61 years.

Six more people died after contracting the coronavirus last week. The average age of deceased people is now 85 years. The virus reproduction rate decreased last week to 0.92, although in the latest update it stands at 1.12.

Vaccinations

31,520 doses of Covid-19 vaccines were administered over the course of the last seven days. 2,940 people received their first shot, 1,834 their second one, and 26,746 people got a booster jab.

As the location is needed for other purposes, the pop-up vaccination centre in Grand-Rue in Luxembourg City is set to close its doors on 31 December. The mobile unit will also change location starting next year.

Children aged 5 and older can now also be vaccinated in a few centres and at a selection of paediatric offices.

In terms of coronavirus residue in the country’s water purification plants, authorities report no change from the previous week, but stress that the level remains significantly elevated.
