The french Gendarmerie announced this catch on their social media. They stated to have seized more than €30,000 worth of tobacco from Luxembourg, on 1 August.
Inside of a suspicious van, the officers found 137 kilos of tobacco, 200 cigarettes and 15,200 cigarette filters. These have all been destroyed since.
The driver and passenger of the van have been arrested and taken into custody for tobacco smuggling. They will be judged in January 2024 in Charleville-Mézières. Their vehicle could be confiscated and they could pay a fine up to €750 and up to a year of prison.
French prices for tobacco and cigarettes are double and sometimes even triple of the going rates in Luxembourg. So it has been enticing to smuggle tobacco across the French-Luxembourgish border.
The legal limit of tobacco that you can carry when crossing a border is one carton of cigarettes, i.e. 200 cigarettes, 250g of tobacco, 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars.
