For individuals grappling with severe illnesses, organ transplantation often stands as the sole hope for survival. For others, it signifies an opportunity to regain a high quality of life, breaking free from a reliance on life-support machines.
In order for Luxembourg’s residents to continue to benefit from transplants, it is important that Luxembourg plays its part in the field of organ donation. The fundamental truth remains: without organ donations, transplants simply cannot happen.
In 2022, eight organs were extracted in Luxembourg, while 38 organs sourced from the Grand Duchy were successfully transplanted into recipients within the Eurotransplant network. Notably, there was an uptick in demand for organs, with 105 patients - 15 more than in 2020 - awaiting transplant placement in the past year.
In addition, 55 new patients were added to the transplant waiting list, while one patient from the existing list passed away. In 2022, 35 Luxembourg residents underwent organ transplantation.
In principle, every deceased individual in the Grand Duchy is a potential organ donor. However, those who enlist in the passport de vie (“life passport”) programme facilitate this process, relieving their families of the burden of difficult decisions during a challenging period. An app, compatible with both iPhones and Android devices, streamlines registration, and the Ministry of Health’s website offers an additional platform for enrolment.
