After completing an average of 50 to 100 homes annually in recent years, the Housing Fund has announced it intends to more than double its output in 2026, with over 200 units targeted for delivery.

The Housing Fund has set its sights on completing more than 200 homes in 2026, a year it has announced as a "great year" for the creation of new affordable housing, following extensive preparatory work on its major projects in 2025.

"Our objective is clear: build more, and faster, to offer everyone a chance to access affordable housing," Prime Minister Luc Frieden stated during his State of the Nation address at the end of May before the Chamber of Deputies. The Housing Fund's 2025 review – made public on Wednesday 1 July 2026 – indicates that, despite opposition criticism, initiatives are moving in the right direction.

Housing remains the number one concern for Luxembourg residents, and demand is becoming increasingly pressing. Jacques Vandivinit, the director of the Housing Fund, noted that the waiting list for rental properties continues to grow. At the end of 2025, the Fund had 7,055 registered households, with 1,604 new applications registered over the course of the year. Current figures from the national list hover around 9,500 households across all categories. "So we can see that demand is very strong," Vandivinit observed, adding that "it is no longer just the poorest households" that struggle to find housing in Luxembourg.

According to Vandivinit, 2025 was a year of final planning and finishing touches aimed at creating a maximum number of additional homes, notably on the Fund's sites in Mamer ('Wëltgebond' project), Wiltz ('Wunne mat der Wooltz' project), and Dudelange ('NeiSchmelz' district). Preparatory works were accelerated on large plots of land, including brownfield sites. The number of homes currently under construction almost doubled last year, rising from 638 to 1,227 units.

As a result, 2026 will be marked by the inauguration of the first homes in Wiltz and Mamer. The "Wunne mat der Wooltz" project, which will ultimately create 1,575 homes on over 32.5 hectares, represents "one of the biggest projects in the history of the Housing Fund," according to Vandivinit, who noted that it "took a very long time to finally be able to welcome the first tenants and eventually the first buyers in the coming years." 2026 will also be the year during which the Fund aims to "greatly improve customer care" and bring more homes to market than ever before.

In recent years, the Housing Fund has completed an average of between 50 and 100 homes annually. In 2025, 116 homes were delivered, and the Fund's forecast for 2026 stands at more than 200 units, the director announced.
