People will be able to gain a few extra weekends if they take time off work wisely in 2023. Eleven public holidays are planned in Luxembourg, nine of which will offer you either a three-day or even a four-day weekend.

Six public holidays in three months

From Easter Monday on 10 April to National Day on 23 June, there will be six public holidays in Luxembourg.

For those who do not work on Saturdays or Sundays, Easter Monday automatically extends the weekend by one day. The same applies to Monday 1 May, Labour Day.

Europe Day comes the following week on Tuesday 9 May. This might be an opportunity to take Monday off and have an extended weekend. A similar possibility will come again with Ascension Day on Thursday 18 May, meaning that Friday is a good opportunity to take time off work.

Then comes Whit Monday on Monday 29 May and National Day on Friday 23 June.

Finally, two school holidays take place in the next three months:

  • the Easter holidays began on Saturday 1 April 2023 and end on Sunday 16 April 2023
  • the Whitsun holidays start on Saturday 27 May 2023 and end on Sunday 4 June 2023

As for the summer holidays, a little more patience is needed as they start on 15 July.

List of remaining public holidays in Luxembourg in 2023

  • Easter Monday: Monday 10 April
  • Labour Day: Monday 1 May
  • Europe Day: Tuesday 9 May
  • Ascension Day: Thursday 18 May
  • Whit Monday: Monday 29 May
  • National Day: Friday 23 June
  • Assumption of Mary: Tuesday 15 August
  • All Saints’ Day: Wednesday 1 November
  • Christmas: Monday 25 December
  • Boxing Day: Tuesday 26 December

In addition, there are specific days off in certain sectors, such as bank holidays on Good Friday (7 April) and the afternoon of 24 December.

Finally, it should be noted that public holidays that fall on a day of rest can be recovered at a later stage. Indeed, the Luxembourg Labour Code provides that employees are entitled to a day of compensatory leave that can be used “within three months” when a public holiday falls on an off day. This compensatory leave “must be taken in kind and cannot be reimbursed by financial compensation”.
