With Luxembourg basking in unusually high temperatures, this year’s National Day festivities come with added risks, especially for the most vulnerable. Dr Jean-Claude Schmit, director at the Directorate of Health, joined RTL Today Radio’s Ben Andrews with a clear message: “It’s really an extreme situation.”
Schmit stressed that older people and young children should avoid exposure to the heat and, if possible, stay at home in a cool place and watch the ceremonies on TV.
Dr Schmit emphasised that precautions are important for everyone heading out for National Day. He advised people to cover their heads, avoid direct sun, and drink water regularly. "Even if you don’t feel the thirst, you have to drink," he said.
He also had a message for younger revellers. "Please avoid alcohol, at least not too much alcohol," he said, warning that excessive drinking in the heat can be dangerous.
For those planning to celebrate outdoors, Dr Schmit recommended staying in the shade and waiting until later in the day. "Stay in the shade, go out later," he said, pointing out that the fireworks take place in the evening, making that a more suitable time to head out than during the hottest hours.
Dr Schmit said people suffering from heat-related symptoms may start to feel dizzy, experience low blood pressure, feel nauseous, develop a fever, and generally feel unwell. He also stressed that older people often do not experience thirst in the same way as younger people, making it especially important for them to drink water regularly.
Before heading out, Dr Schmit recommended bringing a bottle of water and covering the head. "Having a bottle with water is very important today," he said.
He also noted that Luxembourg City has provided water refill stations. Alcohol, he said, should be avoided or consumed only in moderation during periods of extreme heat.
