MamerGreens angered by snow cannon plans during winter festivities

RTL Today
The municipality of Mamer is planning to build a cross-country slope, as well as a snow slide, behind the local castle for its "Winter Moments" event in December.

But The Greens argue that it is “unjustifiable” to make use of snow cannons due to their “enormous” water and energy consumption. Local party officials therefore question the message that this will send, suggesting that there is no climate crisis.

In an RTL interview, Mamer Mayor Gilles Roth from the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV) underlined that the snow cannon was the exact same one used by former Differdange Mayor Roberto Traversini from The Greens.

Roth therefore showed little understanding for how the Greens can now start to criticise his party for doing the same thing: “I suppose I will never see them on a plane or on foreign ski slopes, because they also do make use of cannons abroad.” Councilwoman Adèle Schaaf from the Greens countered by underlining that it is “never too late to improve.” She further explained the importance of being able to look climate activists in the eyes. The cannon costs €35,000.

Roth meanwhile emphasised that the municipality of Mamer was adamant about providing winter entertainment to families and children, especially during the pandemic. Schaaf responded by saying that her party supports the Mamer “Winter Moments”, but draws a line at the use of snow cannons.
