Spain and Luxembourg have maintained close relations for decades – even centuries. While around 10,000 Spanish nationals live in the Grand Duchy, Luxembourgers are particularly drawn to Spain’s cities and islands for their holidays.
However, the two European countries share far more than tourism links. This was underlined by the two heads of state during the visit to Madrid.
King Felipe of Spain recalled 2014, when he and his wife were warmly received in Luxembourg by Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa. On that occasion, they also had the opportunity to meet the then Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume.
During a luncheon at the Spanish Palace on Thursday, Guillaume – now in his role as Luxembourg’s new head of state – highlighted the visit of his grandfather Jean to Spain in 1980:
“At that time he spoke about Spain’s candidacy to join the EU and Luxembourg’s clear support for it. He said that Spain’s accession would enrich Europe politically, economically and culturally.” Today, Spain’s membership in the European Union can be regarded as a success story. Spain and Luxembourg share common values, and the visit to Madrid is also seen as an opportunity to strengthen cooperation and deepen economic ties.
“Three ministers responsible for trade, finance, the economy, and energy are accompanying us on this visit, demonstrating Luxembourg’s commitment to deepening our relations”, said the Grand Duke. The three ministers, together with business representatives and Grand Duke Guillaume, were also received on Thursday by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and later by members of parliament.
