Trade unions Apess, Féduse, SEW and SNE explained in a joint press release that it was clear that the government had taken into account various scenarios before rolling out the plan for Luxembourg's school sector. The unions stressed their hope that the government bases decisions on the recommendations of experts.
The safety of pupils and teachers needs to be the top priority, they said.
They further highlighted that some pupils either belong to high risk groups themselves or have high risk patients in their direct social environment. The same holds true for teachers.
According to the unions, many questions remain open. They for instance questioned how pupils and teachers can be efficiently protected against the virus and how social distancing can be guaranteed in a school setting.
The question of public transport was also raised. Younger primary school pupils may particularly struggle to maintain physical distance from each other, the unions highlighted. It also remains unclear how schools and so-called maison-relais daycare centres will interact with each other.
Minister of Education Claude Meisch is hoped to shed light on some of these questions during this Thursday's press briefing at 2pm.
