Maxime Miltgen and Georges Engel are the new co-presidents of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP). The Luxembourg City councillor and the former Minister of Labour and Sport take over from Francine Closener and Dan Biancalana.
The LSAP ushered in a new era of leadership during its party congress on Saturday morning in Bouillon. Georges Engel and Maxime Miltgen were elected as co-party presidents, running unopposed. Engel, currently an MP and former Minister of Labour and Sport, secured 90.4% of the votes, while Miltgen, a Luxembourg City councillor, received 78.5%.
They succeed Francine Closener and Dan Biancalana, who stepped down after four years at the helm and did not seek re-election.
Sacha Pulli was confirmed as Secretary General with 93% of the vote, also running without an opposing candidate. The same applied to the election of the new Vice President, a role taken over by Max Molitor, co-president of the Young Socialists. He succeeds Maxime Miltgen in this position. Kenichi Breden was retained as General Treasurer.
Looking ahead, the primary challenge for the newly elected leadership will be to guide the LSAP into the 2028 legislative elections. With this objective in mind, the party extended the duration of mandates from two to three years.
In addition to the leadership elections, the approximately 300 party members gathered in Bouillon also approved a new statement of principles, which passed with around 91% of the votes.
