The Minister for Security has not identified any risk of the violence spreading to Luxembourg. In an answer to a parliamentary question from Pirate MP Marc Goergen on Friday, Henri Kox explained there was ‘no need’ to mobilise the police to protect infrastructures near the French border.

However, this was a cause for concern just a month ago - especially after the destruction of public buildings close to Luxembourg. The town of Mont-Saint-Martin, near Rodange, was particularly hard-hit. A school, medical centre and other premises were set on fire, and the town hall was ransacked.

In spite of the tranquillity on this side of the border, the minister asserts that ‘the police are keeping a very close eye on the situation in France and remain in contact with their French counterparts’. Above all, Kox stresses the vigilance of the forces, ready to adapt their action at any moment.
He also added that the Grand Ducal police had lent a helping hand to its neighbour during the preparation for the French national holiday on 14 July. With the exception of Mont-Saint-Martin, the celebrations were ultimately peaceful.
