These figures were provided by the Ministry of Health to mark World Organ Donor Day on Thursday.

The number of organ donations in the Grand Duchy remains relatively low. Last year saw seven organ donations, compared to eight in 2022.

A total of 22 organs were transplanted thanks to these donations, via the Eurotransplant centres, which coordinate organ donation across the EU.

In accordance with Luxembourgish law, every person is considered a potential organ donor. The authorities advise the public to complete a “Passeport de vie”, or an organ donation passport, and to indicate this in their electronic patient files. This makes the process easier for medical teams to have an overview and also prevents families from having to make difficult decisions in emotionally turbulent times.

In order to become an organ donor, apply for the “Passport de vie” here.
