The great Luxembourgish traffic jam, a staple of living in the Grand Duchy. Unless you're on a bike, in which case you can comfortably ride down a cycle path, bypassing the motorists stewing in their cars. Maybe give them a wave as you sail past on your two-wheeled carriage.
Mobility week: Luxembourg needs to let go of its love of cars
Some people are put off the idea of cycling by the thought of breathing in toxic exhaust fumes. But did you know that studies have shown the inside of a car is more polluted than the outside? Not to mention the pollution occurring in tunnels, should you have the misfortune to get stuck behind a lorry, or a bus. You might as well be on a bike!
With the average monthly fuel cost reaching around €110 for two full tanks, the costs of running a car are plentiful. Two months' worth of fuel bills could get you a decent entry level bicycle. That's not even mentioning car insurance, tyre costs, maintenance...
Park + Ride full? No private car park at work? Fed up of circling the same dingy underground car park, eyes watering from the fumes, as you face down yet another commuter desperate to steal the space you've had your eye on for the last five minutes? Think of your cycling coworker, who, bicycle safely attached to some nearby railings, is probably enjoying their coffee right now, while you're cursing some gentleman in a 4x4 who decided his precious vehicle required more than one space. Cycle to work and you too could bid farewell to the daily parking headache.
The car, a symbol of freedom! Until you hit a traffic jam and even the sportiest of cars can't help you escape. Meanwhile, a savvy cyclist has just passed you, navigating the dangers of the cycle path (distracted pedestrians, broken glass, uneven surfaces), only encountering traffic when they hit a gang of wannabe Tour de France competitors. You don't need Lycra to be free - just a bicycle, a helmet (we're all about the safety here), and you're off!
