Five cash machines across the network were reported to have been manipulated by fraudsters, who mounted a device designed to trap customers’ cards – a scam known as card trapping. In such cases, the card doesn’t fully enter the ATM but gets stuck, while victims are prompted via a sticker to enter their PIN. This way, scammers can obtain both the card and the PIN. After carrying out the fraud, the device is removed and the ATM appears to function normally again.

Spuerkeess emphasizes that a PIN will never be requested in such situations, and reminds customers never to share their PIN code with anyone. The bank has informed the police and the Luxembourg Bankers’ Association (ABBL). From Thursday afternoon, warnings about the scam will also appear directly on ATM screens.

In response to RTL’s inquiry, police confirmed that individual cases had already been reported in this context. In one instance, unauthorised cash withdrawals were made, and a formal complaint was filed.

Authorities are urging the public to be especially vigilant at the moment and to carefully inspect ATMs for any signs of tampering.
