The fire started at around 9.30pm on Wednesday night at the ArcelorMittal site in Differdange. Given the extent of the blaze, three water tenders, two fire engines, an ambulance and a command vehicle were sent to tackle the incident.
The first teams on the scene had to cope with large amounts of smoke and could only work using insulated breathing protection. Four lances were needed to fight the fire which extended over a surface of 10 by 15 metres.
As water supplies were affected, the Emergency Operations Commander (COS) requested the reinforcement of three additional water tenders. The Operations Management Centre was deployed to coordinate the units and ensure operational coverage.
The fire was declared under control at 11.45pm and was extinguished by 1am on Thursday morning. A patrol team remained on the scene for several hours afterwards to monitor the situation and keep watch for further risks of fire.
The Water Management Administration is to assess the risks of possible pollution from water used for fire fighting.
No casualties were reported. The Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps health support was on site to supervise the teams involved.
In total, 48 firefighters were engaged with 12 vehicles.
