The question of why municipal mergers continue to fail in Luxembourg, despite clear citizen backing, has been raised by the General Federation of Municipal Workers, FGFC, in a statement released on Friday.

Just two days ago, it was announced that Bettendorf has definitively pulled out of talks for a merger with the Nordstad, although 57% of the local population had voted in favour of resuming negotiations with the four neighbouring municipalities in a consultative referendum.

The FGFC expressed disappointment over this decision, pointing out that the union has been advocating for mergers for years. In their press statement, the union argued that without structural reforms, municipal services will not be sustainable in the long term.
