The scammers on the other end of the line pose as authorities by announcing a tragedy, such as the involvement of a relative in a serious car accident. Once announced, they go on to tell the victim that the person in question has been jailed and can only be released by posting bail.

Under shock, the victim can be pressured so that they will agree to pay for the release by accepting the offer of these individuals who tend to pose as police officers, prosecutors, or even family members. They will then come to the victim’s home to collect valuables, cash, or other means of payment.

One of the most convincing aspects of these scam attempts is that perpetrators use a special technique so that false numbers are displayed on the victims’ mobile phones.

The police put out a reminder that these approaches are not official and completely illegal. Authorities would never ask for cash or valuables to pay a deposit over the phone.
