New type of scamFake shop employee followed victims home in Steinfort and Strassen

RTL Today
Authorities have reported two cases of credit card fraud in Steinfort and Strassen, where a scammer targeted shoppers leaving supermarkets or shopping centres.

In both incidents, the perpetrator followed the victims to their homes.

Once at the victims’ residences, the fraudster assumed the role of a shop employee and claimed that the victims had overpaid by €100. He offered to refund the excess amount, leading the victims to insert their credit cards into a card reader and enter their PIN codes.

In both cases, the scammer also attempted to gain entry to the house, for example by asking for a glass of water or offering to carry purchases inside. In one case, this was successful, and the scammer stole the victim’s credit card.

The scammer in both cases spoke French, according to the police.

To prevent falling victim to a similar scam, authorities advise the public to exercise caution and follow these essential tips:

  • Do not let strangers into your flat or house
  • Never disclose personal information
  • Do not give bank cards to strangers
  • In such cases, never enter PIN codes on unknown devices
  • Report any suspicious incidents to the police immediately via the emergency number 113
  • Have the bank card blocked immediately
  • Victims should file a complaint with the police
